Helping Herself (and You) get a Better Job

As a Career Services representative at AIU Los Angeles, Mery Ozen does all she can to help the university's students get the best job they can: she helps with résumé writing, interviewing skills, and networking. Last year she helped herself as well: she got an MBA at AIU Los Angeles. "I wanted to excel in my field and knew that an MBA would be a great way to do it."

Mery was right. Around the same time she graduated with her MBA in December of 2005, Mery was promoted to a senior Career Services rep at AIU. "I couldn't have done it without an MBA."

"It was a blessing to have the opportunity to not only get my MBA but to do it in such a convenient way: in one year and at night. The schedule allowed me to keep working full-time." Thankfully she also had an understanding husband. He had recently gotten his Master's degree while continuing to work. "He knew what to expect from my schedule."

It wasn't easy though. "It was very intense. Professors really pushed me, and I learned quite a bit. One of the greatest things was that professors went beyond the textbooks. We had professors who had been around the world and were able to share their firsthand worldly knowledge with us. These were things I couldn't have learned just by reading some book."

Mery especially liked that she was able to do a concentration in Human Resource Management. "All I had to do was take a few extra classes." Surprisingly though, she says her favorite class was one she had expected to hate: Global Financial Management. "I hate finance. When I got my Bachelor's degree, I hated finance. It was one of the worst classes. But this time around, Professor Derek D'Sa was great. I actually enjoyed studying for the class and, because of his patience, I learned lots of different formulas I wouldn't have learned otherwise."

Since she's already used her new MBA to get a promotion, Mery doesn't have any more immediate goals aside from doing the best she can at her job. "The goal is to just keep excelling in my field, using my MBA."
